We had a leisurely morning in Nang Rong, catching up some rest and spent a little time exploring the village houses near the guesthouse.
As Nang Rong is located along the major highway, many buses to Korat (Nakhon Ratchasima) passing by stop at the Nang Rong bus stop. We just hopped onto one that happen to call at the bus station when we got there. The bus journey to Korat was about 2 hours. We had lunch at the Korat bus station before catching another bus to Phimai (1 hour).
We check into the Old Phimai Guesthouse which was just outside the Phimai Historical Park. It's a old wooden house converted into a guesthouse.
It was about 3pm by the time we settled in. For the rest of the afternoon, we decided to walk to the banyan tree about 1.2 km away.
Sai Ngam
Sai Ngam claims to be the largest banyan tree in Thailand.
In Sri Lanka, the botanical garden in Kandy had a giant banyan tree that was very beautiful. It was a huge tree with a canopy that spread over a large area.
Sai Ngam, on the other hand looked more like a forest on its own. From the distance, you can't tell it is a single tree. Even when you walked into the tree, it does not look like a single tree either. It looked more like many co-joined trees instead. You can't find the main tree trunk of the original tree. Apparently the main trunk the tree grew from had died and rotted away.
It was a pleasant walk from Sai Ngam back to the town in the evening twilight. The night market was abuzz when we got back. It's difficult to resist the snacks in the night market. We ate quite a bit of junk food before we got to a restaurant ran by two transexuals for our dinner.
